Department of Operation Theatre (OT)

An operating theater is a facility within a hospital where surgical operations are carried out in a sterile environment. An operation theatre (OT) technologist forms an intrinsic part of any hospital. She/he is a member of a multidisciplinary team in operation theaters who plays an active role in the smooth functioning of the operation theatre. OT technologist assists anesthesiologist and surgical team during preoperative, intraoperative period and provides support to patients in Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). OT technologist plays an important role in advance preparation of equipment that is necessary for various anesthesia / surgical procedures. OT technologist also looks after all the works including and management of the OT which includes managing the patients in & out of operation theatre, care and maintenance of all the OT equipment as well as management of the staff.

The course is planned in such a way that students not only get theoretical knowledge through classroom teaching but also focus on practical training. Different industrial visits and events are organized by the department to impart the in-depth knowledge of the students.

Regular summer and winter training/ internship programs are conducted in various hospitals and health care centres to provide specialized professional training so that the students can seek jobs as OT Technologists in professional institutions, government, and voluntary organizations.

Eligibility CriteriaThe candidate must have completed age of 17 years of the age as on 31st December of the admission year. There is no maximum age limit for the Qualification. 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Mathematics.A candidate who has appeared in the examination of intermediate (science) is also eligible for entrance examination but must produce the mark sheet or certificate at the time of admission to the course. Students shall be admitted once a year.
Syllabus Break-upFirst year(12 months)

Paper 1
1.General anatomy and physiology (cytology,histology,osteology and only basic of all organ system of body).
2.Only basics of relevant pathology,pharmacology(including anaesthetic agent) & Microbiology.

Paper 2
1.Detailed surgical anatomy.
2.Basic of O.T.Techniques,C.S.S.D techniques and anaesthesia techniques.
3.Hand Hygiene & prevention of cross infection.
4.Basic life Support (BLS) & Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

PRACTICAL During first year, they should be there only as “Observers” in proclical classes.

Observership for –
1.Pre-operative preparation,
2.Intra-operative assistance.
3.Post operative care & CSSD techniques.

ADDITIONAL-
1.Basic Computer skills  
2.Basic English  
3. soft skill like – interpersonal relationship skill & Moral education  

Second year(12 months)

Paper 1
1.Only Relevant  Surgical & Medical Conditions (Relevant to O.T.Technician).  
2.Nursing procedures like vital recording I.M/I.V/S.C injection, oxygen therapy, Nebulization, Catherisation, I.V. infusion.
 
Paper 2
1.Details of common surgeries & applied O.T.Techniques.  
2.Basic of CSSD & Sterilization Practices, bio-medical waste management.  
3.Basic Bio-Medical & Engineering Physics of O.T. Equipment & Instrument.

PRACTICAL
•Hands on training of Hand wash/scrubbing & sterilization practices.
• Hands on training of pre operative preparation.
